Love relationships are exciting, joyful, sexual, and fun! Over time, the relationship can grow to be intensely intimate, caring, and loving in a way that commitment, security and close companionship naturally grow. If you’re reading this, your relationship may not be in the place you want it to be, or it may be in a place that doesn’t feel good.
Maybe the two of you are having communication issues, power struggles, sexual or trust issues. Your current situation doesn’t mean the two of you are not a good match, and experiencing conflicts in the relationship is not uncommon. Couples counseling is an ideal place to start because it can help you sort the issues out with an expert in couple problem-solving.
The ability to openly talk about your relationship issues with someone that can offer an unbiased view and feedback to help you both gain insight into the problems. Often a different point of view can help change how you view the issue, and a different view often fosters problem-solving action.
There are some myths about couples counseling that are not true and should be discussed. Going to couples therapy does not mean anyone has “failed” and no one is “crazy” for going to therapy. It shows the strength and commitment of both people to go to treatment.
Couples therapy does not work pointing out who’s “wrong” in any given situation. The therapist works to sort through the issue for the goal of problem-solving and letting go of problems that are creating conflict within the relationship.
One session of couples counseling will not help you decide if you want to stay together or not. Keep in mind, your relationship did not get to this point in one day, and it will take more than one session to move from this point. Commit to a few sessions before making that decision.
